Dermal filler treatments are a popular non-surgical option for those seeking to enhance their facial features or address signs of aging.
They involve injecting a gel-like substance into targeted areas of the face to restore volume, smooth lines and wrinkles, and improve overall facial contour.
Depending on the type of filler used, results can last from several months to a year or more. Common areas treated include the cheeks, lips, under-eye area, and nasolabial folds.
The products commonly used consist of synthetically produced naturally occurring compounds that exist within our bodies e.g. hyaluronic acid. Many products are now commercially available such as Restylane, Perlane, Belotero, Teosyal, Radiesse and Juvederm. These products have now been on the market for many years and have proved to be safe, reliable and effective and are CE approved.
Dermal fillers are implanted by the operator often under local anaesthetic.

There are very few side effects that may occur with these treatments, but redness, slight swelling and mild bruising can be expected for a few days. Fillers are commonly placed in the nose-to-mouth lines, marionette lines at the corners of the mouth and in the lips.
Lip treatments may occasionally provoke an attack of cold sores if you are prone to these. However, the use of Zovirax cream (or similar) for a few days after the treatment can help prevent such cold sore development.

Before receiving dermal filler treatment, it is important to take some pre-treatment steps to ensure optimal results and reduce the risk of complications.
If you take medication such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and warfarin please notify the Doctor/Nurse as these can lead to a worsening of bruising. In addition, if you suffer from any bleeding or skin disorders this should be made known.
Here are some things you can do before getting dermal fillers:
By and large the implanting of dermal fillers is extremely safe indeed and carries no unpleasant adverse effects.
Bruising – may occur following any injection into the skin but is all the more likely to be noticeable following dermal filler treatment if a person takes aspirin, anti-inflammatory tablets or anticoagulant therapy. Rarely, some people are prone to bruising as a result of a clotting disorder. Any bruise can often be improved by the application of ice at the time of injection and either arnica or vitamin K cream may help alleviate the unsightliness of a bruise, which will usually last for around a week.
Lumpiness – following dermal fillers is easily resolved using firm massage. This is usually carried out at the time of implant, but any residual lumps can often be addressed similarly. Usually, I prefer to carry this out myself. Very rarely a small lump may respond to the injection of a chemical that can dissolve small amounts of the filler. This should always be carried out by myself.
Unevenness – uncommonly areas of unevenness may be noticed which are very easily resolved.
Blueness – some gel fillers if injected too superficially can produce a blue hue. This is a rare event but can readily be corrected.
